In the early stages of tooth decay or when spots appear on the tooth, the enamel can be treated without drilling and filling, simply by applying a special gel to the tooth that fills small lesions and restores the mineral layer of the tooth. Minerals make up as much as 96 per cent of the tooth enamel.
Icon treatment is a completely non-invasive method of restoring the surface of the tooth if the tooth decay has not yet damaged the deeper layers of the tooth, i.e. if only the tooth enamel and the upper layer of dentin below it are damaged. This method is ideal if the tooth surface is damaged after wearing braces, or if you notice that white spots have appeared on your teeth.
It is a completely painless procedure. During the procedure, the tooth being treated is isolated from the others, and then a special gel is applied to open the pores of the damaged tooth. The tooth is then cleaned with ethanol and air dried. After that, the dental hygienist applies a special liquid resin to the tooth, which is absorbed into the pores of the tooth. Finally, the resin layer is light cured and the surface of the tooth is restored. The tooth decay is completely blocked from penetrating further. In case of deeper damage, the procedure should be repeated. Treatment of the tooth surface with the Icon system is considered by specialists to be a more effective procedure than conventional fluoride therapy.
Icon treatment is suitable for patients of any age. It does not require any special preparation, aside from our recommendation that you come for it on a full stomach.
Keep in mind that you cannot eat or drink for at least two hours after the procedure, and you will have to avoid all foods and beverages that stain (coffee, wine, dark sauces, beetroot, strawberries, bilberries, fruit juices, sweets with bright synthetic dyes, etc.) for the rest of the day.
